Abuja — The Federal Government has ordered Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to enforce adequate rules and regulations in relation to service delivery in the sub- sector, to ensure that operators meet relevant standards.
Minister for Information and Communication, Professor Dora Akunyili, said this at an interactive session with operators and stakeholders in the telecoms industry.
According to her, the meeting was aimed at sharing the feelings and concerns of Nigerians, with respect to the telecommunications industry and to set out clear path for accelerating performance of this critical development sector.
Akunyili said, "we have directed NCC to collect statistics on dropped call rates and other quality of service parameters on weekly basis in order to determine operators performance.
This report should be properly analysed, and made available to office of the Minister on a regular basis. We shall use these reports to assess operators to know those that are living up to Nigerians' expectations.
"NCC is also required to enforce adopted international regulations and guidelines for all operators with regard to deployment of telecommunications facilities.
NCC should also collate existing and proposed optic fiber network plans of various operators. These network topologies should be produced into one national transmission plan.
This will enable us fashion out w ays and means of achieving a harmonised transmission network plan that is free from unnecessary duplications, and beneficial to all," he said.
